it's rather amusing if you think about it, but i haven't been updating the updates page
very much. will resume work on it with a new format that will make it much easier to
specifically locate where new content was added and when. when more is complete. for
now, poke around, i'm sure you'll find something.

please check 6/16/06 entry. changed entry pages. added two new entries to articles.
finished (i think) changing gallery names. did more but don't feel like writing about it.
will be adding much more soon now that i am caught up with changing old gallery
names.

7/2/06
continued work on changing gallery names. added new thumbs to gallery page, which
will be connected to previews soon. updated showings, updates, and purchase pages.
tinkered at length with layout on others to no great effect. sank into deep despair over
all the work left to be done. decided to have a cigarette and go to bed instead of
adding more articles, which will be up tomorrow i imagine. if anyone reads them anyway.

a cry for help...

ok, i'm going to admit it, i'm really struggling with this site right now. finding the time to
locate sites and work on permission is time consuming. photographing them is also,
and the cleaning and editing of the photos, even more so. then there's the site
construction, which still astounds me with just how long it can take, the researching of
histories of the sites, and promoting the web site. i have a goal envisioned as to what
this site is meant to represent, but that goal seems so far off. during the last month i
have done a pretty phenomenal amount of photography and worked on gaining
permission for multiple sites, and as a result, new content on this site (not to mention
my social life) has dwindled.
so, assuming you even read this far, what is it that i'm asking? mainly i'm looking for
kind souls out there who believe in the cause and can offer some assistance. the
following would be greatly appreciated:

- anyone with .html knowledge that can offer advice or even (god willing) assistance in
site construction. i will happily settle for the former because i have a million questions
and no one to ask.

- any history buffs who can help research the backgrounds of sites, the more in depth
the better (although anything helps).

- anyone who has a familiarity with these sites and can offer firsthand info on their
operation.

- anyone who knows about promoting websites and/or photography, who will share
pointers on how to draw traffic.

- webmasters who will add a link to my page, people who will recommend it to friends,
and anyone else who will help get the word out there.

- people who know of abandoned sites and/or can assist in gaining permission to them.

- patrons of my photography in general.

if any of these describe you, or if you have any other ideas how you might be of aid
contact me please help, if you are able. doing this alone is a much huger task than i
ever imagined and while i have no intention of quitting, i am struggling to keep afloat.

... and a new future ahead?

currently this site is undergoing a lot of revisions, many of which may be invisible to
you, but are significant nonetheless. first and foremost, i am changing the name of
nearly EVERY abandoned site listed here, so as to protect them (and in some cases,
myself). you have no idea how much work this entails - essentially rewriting every part
of every page in every gallery - and it may cause some technical problems in the site
itself. please be patient as i work on it, and if you experience problems, let me know.

while in the midst of this process, it may take a while for new content to get added. i ask
that you have faith that i will continue to work on this site, and that you will stop back in
the future. the reading jail gallery is almost complete, and i still have well over 25
galleries i intend to add, as well as multiple articles i plan to write for the site, and also
the site info pages that will give you an historical overview of their significance (which
will be as accurate as possible but cannot contain any information that will identify the
name or location of the site).

the main reason i am doing this is to protect the buildings. sadly, urban exploration's
bastard cousin, graffiti and vandalism, take a tremendous toll on these buildings and i
do not want anything to do with furthering the devastation the ignorant wreak on the
places i photograph.

in late july i will have a photo essay published on the rise and fall of the state hospital
system - this is the deadline i have set for myself to have a significant amount of new
content added to the site by. i have also just purchased a better camera - so this will
allow future prints to be offered at larger sizes. although i must admit, sales here have
been rather slow. they have never been the main intent of the site. the reason i sell
them is that (a) if you enjoy my work you can enjoy it as art in your home, and (b) it
offsets the thousands of dollars i spend on doing what i do (and this isn't even
factoring in the health care costs i will no doubt later incur due to my exposure to these
places) and the hours and hours and hours and hours i work on this site.

the main intent of this website is to preserve these buildings and their histories, to give
them a voice, and in doing so, perhaps to give voice to the many people who find they
resonate somewhere deeply within them too. this site lies somewhere between an
historical examination, a photographic essay, and a study of the depths of depression
and redemption that these places embody. as always, i hope you enjoy it.
