| the artwork on the ceiling was captivating - the representations of the saints were not only vividly painted, but they were bas reliefs, so when the afternoon light hit them they had an eerie quality of depth and realism despite how stylized they were. i stared at saint mark's icon in particular for quite some time - the way the light reflected off it was beautiful, terrifying, and heartbreaking all at once, and i am not sure i can adequately explain why. |
