if you are interested in arranging a presentation or showing, i would be happy to work with you to make it happen. for art exhibitions and showings, please contact me. my resume is here and my artist statement is here, you can cut sections as needed for press releases. in most cases for presentations i charge a small speaking fee to cover time/expenses, although in some circumstances (such as for a select few nonprofit groups or historical societies) this may be waived if the travel costs are not too great and scheduling permits. thus far i have given presentations on the following three areas, although i am open to further suggestions:
the historical value of preservation through photography ideally suited for historical societies or other groups where a broader overview of my work would best be suited, this presentation focuses on the subject of abandoned buildings of all styles and varieties in our midst, the dangers they can pose, their value to the communities they are located in, and their potential for reuse without destroying their character. photos from many different types of buildings are displayed and discussed, from asylums to factories, prisons and schools.
the people we've left behind this presentation explores the vanishing legacy of the american institutional system and some of the colorful characters that populated it. starting with the birth of the asylum era, this presentation follows the high hopes that founded many of these beautiful buildings through the darker days of eugenics, lobotomies, and some of the terrifying 'cures' that patients were subjected to. as the system became outmoded by the promise of cures through modern medications and community treatment, the state hospitals began closing, a process that continues to this day. examining what is left in the wake of the closures, we will discuss the present state of mental health care and the future of the buildings that once were full of such ambition and idealism.
the masters of disaster in this presentation i give an overview of modern exploration photography, both in terms of the risks involved and the growing urban exploration subculture. geared towards photographers, this presentation takes a closer look at the techniques involved in working in low/natural light environments, how to work around the dramatic contrasts found in abandonments, and involves a discussion on the legal and ethical questions abandoned sites pose. an opportunity for questions about on-site photography and post production techniques is available at the end of the lecture.
